Unable to cope with the insurmountable pressures of the modern world, the patients on Nurse Ratched's ward at the State Mental Institution are kept tranquilized and docile. Into their sanctuary from society, a strong, high-spirited stranger comes. McMurphy is the perfect foil for the emasculating Ratched, as he takes it upon himself to make men out of her "boys."
